BARRIQUE SA - Is the importer and supplier of Serbian oak (Slavonian oak) barrels to winemakers. These vessels are crafted from Quercus Petraea oak (80 to 120 year old trees) The staves have a medium-to-fine grain structure and seasoned for 3 years before becoming barrels.
WHY SERBIAN OAK
Serbian oak brings a unique aromatic complexity, akin to French oak, yet with a more prominent focus on spicy and sweet notes. Wines aged in these barrels often develop subtle hints of cloves, cinnamon, almond, and vanilla. This exceptional bouquet arises from the gradual release of compounds such as furfurals, eugenol, and lactones, which enrich the wine's structure and provide a smooth, balanced finish. The result is a memorable and distinctive sensory experience. Known for its ability to elevate and harmonize flavors.
Quercus Petraea oak from Serbia is renowned for its medium-to-fine grain structure and with a medium toasting, infuses wines with a refined complexity. This results in a well-rounded and sophisticated flavor profile that enhances the wine’s character.
IDEAL FOR
These barrels are well suited for aging Syrah and Pinotage, according to prominent winemakers from South Africa. We are also exploring other grape varietals with ongoing trials and the aim is to unlock the full capabilities of these barrels. Varietals such as Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Grenache blanc, Rousanne, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.
