The General Maintenance Assistant is responsible for supporting the Maintenance and Facilities team in ensuring that all equipment, infrastructure, tools, and systems are maintained in safe and proper working condition. The role requires hands-on technical support, strict adherence to health and safety standards, accurate reporting, and a proactive approach to maintenance and inspections.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist with repairs, adjustments, and maintenance to ensure all systems and infrastructure remain in proper working condition.
- Conduct regular inspections, troubleshooting, and technical checks, accurately completing required checklists.
- Perform maintenance and repairs on farm equipment, buildings, vehicles, tools, and infrastructure.
- Carry out practical maintenance tasks including plumbing, minor electrical work (only when directed), painting and decorating, cement work, paving, carpentry, tiling, welding, mechanical repairs, landscaping, specialised cleaning, and installations as required.
- Assist with workshop administration, including:
- Tool and equipment sign-in/sign-out
- Documenting usage of consumables, spares, and tools
- Inventory checks and accounting of tools, equipment, parts, and supplies
- Safely use, clean, store, and secure all tools, equipment, and consumables to prevent injury, wastage, loss, or damage.
- Report damaged or defective tools, equipment, spares, or consumables to the Maintenance Manager immediately.
- Timeously report spares and consumables required to complete maintenance tasks.
- Adhere to all Health and Safety standards, including safe working practices and wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required.
- Operate tools and equipment safely and responsibly at all times.
- Conduct safety inspections and checks on equipment, infrastructure, and vehicles, reporting all deficiencies and damages to Management.
- Act as a safety representative by monitoring and advising colleagues on safe and correct operation of equipment and tools.
- Perform any assigned duties before, during, and after declared emergencies.
- Carry out additional tasks as assigned by the Facilities Manager or other Heads of Department.
