We are seeking an experienced and passionate Horticulturist to lead and uphold horticultural excellence across our estate. This is a senior, hands-on role responsible for landscape design, plant health, tree management, and environmental stewardship, ensuring the estate’s gardens and landscapes are maintained to the highest possible standards.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Landscape Design & Planting Execution
- Plan and implement high-quality planting layouts and seasonal planting programmes
- Develop annual planting schedules aligned with estate objectives
- Ensure optimal germination, growth, and plant establishment
Tree Selection & Establishment
- Select, source, and establish appropriate large trees
- Proactively maintain heritage and feature trees
- Oversee long-term tree health and sustainability
Plant Health & Arboriculture Care
- Monitor and maintain plant and tree health
- Implement pest and disease management strategies
- Apply stress mitigation techniques to improve plant survival and vitality
Site Assessment & Soil Management
- Assess soil type, drainage, and microclimates
- Improve soil health and fertility
- Implement irrigation and water management best practices
Landscape Installation Oversight
- Lead and supervise landscape installations
- Ensure projects meet design intent, quality standards, and timelines
Client & Stakeholder Advisory
- Provide expert horticultural guidance
- Compile formal reports for estate management
- Support strategic landscape planning initiatives
KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
- Qualification in Horticulture (minimum NQF 6)
- Minimum 10 years’ practical experience in ornamental horticulture
- Strong knowledge of:
- Plant biology and physiology
- Botany and taxonomy
- Soil science and environmental conditions
- Irrigation systems and cultivation techniques
- Pest and disease management
- Landscape horticulture principles
