Core responsibilities
- Manage all practical aspects of grape growing from pruning to harvest, ensuring vine health and fruit quality.
- Implement Lanzerac’s strategic plans on the ground, coordinating people, equipment, and timing.
Key responsibilities
- Vineyard operations: Plan and supervise pruning, suckering, shoot thinning, canopy management, irrigation, crop thinning, and harvest timing.
- Pest and disease management: Monitor vineyards, schedule and oversee sprays, and respond to nutrient deficiencies and other stress factors.
- Monitoring and reporting: Track vine health, soil moisture, yields, and fruit quality.
- People management: Lead and train seasonal and permanent crews, allocate tasks, enforce safety procedures, and maintain labour discipline.
- Machinery and infrastructure: Oversee use and basic maintenance of tractors, sprayers, implements, trellis, irrigation, and fences.
- Winery liaison: Coordinate with the winemaker on harvest dates, picking specs, and delivery logistics; sometimes assist during crush.
- Responsible for the care and management of the entire estate including all farm infrastructure.
Administration
- Accurate record keeping of farm activities (sprays, irrigation, yields, blocks)
- Record keeping of resource usage (diesel, petrol, chemicals etc.)
- Budgets: Farm budget preparation and management
- Payroll: Submit monthly timesheets to HR for payroll
- Compliance: Responsible for IPW and WIETA audits.
- Environmental compliance: Utilizes farm record-keeping data to populate online environmental and compliance tools, enabling the establishment of sustainability goals and accurate reporting on adherence to importer wine standards
