Job Description

  • Manage and run the Avocado nursery (Greenhouse, shade house, production block, and sales), during a period of 3-4 months while the head nursery manager is on maternity leave (would need to start before this begins to be trained – i.e. 6 month position). There is the potential of moving into a permanent position after this period as the Nursery assistant manager, who works under the head nursery manager, if the individual shows a good performance during the initial employment period. Assistant nursery manager must be able to run the nursery in the head managers absence.
  • Typical Tasks and Responsibilities
  • The organizing, planning and running of the day to day work for the staff according to the monthly requirements of the nursery.
  • Setting up and following up on the staff with their daily duties. Ensuring those duties are being performed correctly and to standard/as per training.
  • The daily checks and observations that need to be made to influence the planning of the monthly requirements of the nursery.
  • Recording, updating and analysing various records and data that is collected to guide and inform on the numbers and state of the plant progress with in the growth cycle of the avo trees.
  • Problem solving according to the short term and long term needs of the avo plants and the nursery. This includes solving staffing issues, and biological issues such as plant health and temperature control.
  • Contacting and communicating with customers in regards to orders and enquiries. This includes finding new customers; following up with existing customers; and finalising the collection and sale of plants to customers (Very NB for while nursery manager is away).

  • Required Technical Competencies and Experience
  • Degree or diploma in BSc / Agriculture, horticulture, biology, botany, etc advantageous
  • Computer literate ( including excel, word, and email)
  • Agricultural/ nursery experience advantageous
  • Experience managing entry-level staff
  • Experience supervising basic workforce teams
  • Driver’s license

  • Ability to see issues and problems with plants (e.g. notice insects or colour change in leaves)
  • Ability to solve problems

  • Good communicator (able to speak Isizulu advantageous)
  • Adaptable and able to handle changes
  • Able to work within a team structure but still able to complete work independently
