TOPIARY Wine Estate, based in the Franschhoek area, is seeking a driven and talented Junior Viticulturist Assistant (& winery - possibility to assist occasionally in the cellar) to join their team, as permanent.
This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated individual to become part of a boutique, quality-driven wine estate where excellence, attention to detail and hands-on involvement are central to everything we do. Working closely with management, the successful candidate will gain meaningful exposure across all aspects of vineyard production, with additional opportunities to assist in the cellar during key periods of the season.
Key responsibilities
- Assist in the day-to-day management and execution of vineyard operations
- Participate actively in all seasonal vineyard activities, including pruning, shoot thinning, suckering, canopy management and harvesting (around 40-50tons/year)
- Support irrigation, fertilisation and plant health programmes
- Monitor vineyard performance and maintain accurate production records
- Assist with labour supervision, task planning and quality control
- Work closely with management on vineyard strategy and continuous improvement initiatives
- Provide support in the cellar during harvest and selected operational periods, including bottling, labelling and blending preparations
- Contribute positively to all aspects of a boutique estate where teamwork and versatility are highly valued
Ideal Candidate Profile
- Diploma / Degree in Viticulture, Oenology, Agriculture or related field
- Previous practical experience on a wine farm or in a cellar advantageous
- Genuine passion for viticulture and premium wine production
- Strong work ethic, initiative and willingness to learn
- Ability to work independently while also leading or motivating a team when required
- Excellent organisational and communication skills
- Comfortable working outdoors and during seasonal peak periods
- Computer literacy (MS Office; SAWIS advantageous)
- Own reliable transport
