Farm Manager needed for Boutique Wine Farm in Greyton

Lismore is a boutique wine farm located 10km outside of Greyton, currently with 18.6 ha of vineyards of varying age and maturity. 

We are seeking a dedicated, experienced, and proactive Farm Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of our farming enterprise. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing vineyard operations, supervising farm staff, maintaining farming equipment and infrastructure, and ensuring the farm operates efficiently and cost-effectively. This role requires strong leadership, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work closely with the farm owner to achieve operational and strategic objectives.

The ideal candidate has appropriate experience and enthusiasm for growing world-class wine and becoming part of building a growing, dynamic business.  Relocating to Greyton would be required. 

Key Responsibilities

Vineyard Management

  • Oversee all aspects of vineyard operations, including pruning, fertilisation, pest, disease and weed control, canopy management, harvesting, and general vineyard maintenance.
  • Monitor vineyard health and implement best agricultural practices to maximise production and quality.
  • Ensure seasonal tasks are completed according to production schedules.
  • Work closely with external consultants advising on all aspects of the vineyard management. 

Equipment and Infrastructure Management

  • Oversee the maintenance, servicing, and repair of all farming equipment, machinery, and vehicles.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained in safe and operational condition to minimise downtime.
  • Conduct regular inspections of machinery and farm infrastructure.
  • Prepare and submit monthly reports detailing the condition, maintenance status, and operational readiness of all equipment.

Staff Management

  • Lead, supervise, and motivate farm employees to ensure productivity and high-quality workmanship.
  • Allocate daily and weekly work schedules.
  • Monitor staff performance
  • Ensure compliance with all workplace health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Initiate disciplinary procedures when required following all labour laws

Communication and Reporting

  • Maintain direct and regular communication with the farm owner regarding operational activities, challenges, and priorities.
  • Provide weekly operational reports covering vineyard performance, equipment status, staff productivity, maintenance requirements, and ongoing projects.
  • Immediately communicate any significant operational issues requiring management decisions.

Budget Management and Purchasing

  • Understand and work within the approved operational budget.
  • Monitor expenditure and identify opportunities for cost savings without compromising quality or productivity.
  • Obtain owner approval before purchasing equipment, materials, chemicals, fertilisers, or other farm supplies, unless otherwise authorised.
  • Maintain accurate records of purchases and inventory.

General Farm Maintenance

  • Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of all farm buildings, roads, fencing, irrigation systems, and surrounding grounds.
  • Ensure the farm remains clean, organised, safe, and well maintained at all times.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance schedules across all farm assets.

Project Management

  • Oversee the planning and implementation of future farm development projects.
  • Coordinate contractors, suppliers, and internal staff involved in capital improvements and infrastructure development.
  • Monitor project progress and provide regular updates to the farm owner.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required standard.

Reporting

The Farm Manager reports directly to the Farm Owner and is responsible for maintaining open, transparent, and timely communication regarding all aspects of farm operations, budgeting, maintenance, staffing, and project implementation.

Working Conditions

  • Full-time position.
  • Outdoor work in varying weather conditions.
  • Flexibility to work weekends and extended hours during peak farming seasons as required.
  • Availability to respond to urgent operational issues whenever necessary
