Our client, a bold, independent and unconventional wine brand is looking to a appoint an experienced, (or highly astute gen z), half day Bookkeeper to join a small, dynamic and independent wine business in Franschhoek.

We're looking for someone who is comfortable with technology and interested in finding better ways of doing things. You don't need to be an IT specialist, but an interest in automation, integration, AI tools and smarter workflows will be a real advantage.

You'll take responsibility for the day-to-day bookkeeping function and work closely with the business owners and management team with duties including:

  • Maintaining and reconciling the Xero general ledger
  • Bank, card and daily sales reconciliations
  • Reconciling stock across various business systems and investigating variances
  • Managing debtors, creditors, customer invoicing and supplier reconciliations
  • Preparing payment schedules for authorisation
  • Supporting payroll input, tips and commission calculations
  • Preparing month-end reconciliations and supporting schedules
  • Assisting with VAT and excise information
  • Maintaining accurate, organised and audit-ready financial records
  • Identifying discrepancies, unusual transactions and potential control weaknesses

To survive, you will need:

  • At least 5 years' bookkeeping experience to trial balance
  • Strong practical experience using Xero, including reconciliations
  • Experience in an inventory-based business
  • A good working knowledge of VAT
  • The ability to work independently and manage your own priorities
  • Strong attention to detail and a natural problem-solving mindset
  • The confidence to flag something when it doesn't make sense
  • The ability to explain financial issues clearly to non-financial colleagues

Experience in wine, food and beverage, agriculture, e-commerce or another stock-intensive environment would also be great. Experience with Vinsight, Commerce7, POS systems, excise or SARS excise accounts would be a bonus, but isn't essential.

This role would suit someone who enjoys solving problems, creating order and knowing that, because of their work, the business has a clearer and more accurate picture of where it stands. Let’s be real, the first few months will involve more than simply taking over a perfectly organised set of books. There will be reconciliations to complete, balances to investigate and a few areas that need some attention and clean-up. For the right person, that's part of the attraction.
