Hasher Family Wines is a family-owned farm in South Africa's sought after Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. The Assistant Winemaker will report to the Winemaker and will be responsible for (but not limited to) the winemaking process, coordination of harvest activities, quality control, inventory management, and cellar hygiene. The successful candidate must be an excellent team player with strong technical and managerial skills and must deliver on the strategic and quality objectives of the cellar.
Your main responsibilities will be:
- Winemaking: overseeing the winemaking process, from fruit receival through to bottling, including blending and stabilisation of wine.
- Harvest: coordination of harvest activities, including vineyard sampling, fruit receival and processing, cap management, additions, inoculations, pressing and barrel downs.
- Quality control: monitoring and maintaining quality standards throughout production, from vineyard to bottle.
- Inventory management: tracking cellar stock, materials and consumables.
- Compliance and documentation: SAWIS and IPW documentation, and other statutory record keeping.
- Cellar hygiene: maintaining the highest standards of cleanliness and sanitation across the winery.
- Teamwork: working closely with the Winemaker and Cellar Hands, fostering good teamwork and ambiance.
- All other functions related to the role.
We are looking for:
- A degree in a related field (Oenology, Viticulture, or similar).
- A minimum of 2 years' winemaking experience, ideally including some harvests abroad.
- Experience with IPW, SAWIS and WineMS is an advantage.
- Strong technical and managerial skills, with the ability to lead and motivate a team.
- Fluent in English; any additional language is an asset.
- Reliable own transport with a valid driver's licence is required.
- Ability to work flexible hours during harvest.
