Our well-established winery is expanding its operations to the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley and we are seeking to employ a Farm Manager, who will also be responsible for viticulture. With a brand portfolio that is well-established domestically and internationally, we pride ourselves in the quality of our wines as we continuously strive for excellence in all areas of our operations.

Role in the company

The role of the farm manager is to establish a new vineyard on a recently acquired property and to effectively manage all farming activities and take responsibility for vineyard quality. The farm manager will be required to plan, supervise and coordinate all the various farming activities. This shall involve the execution of general vineyard management work and shall require broad farming skills and knowledge in all areas of viticulture.

Key Performance Areas:

  • All vineyard development activities including land preparation, water management, trellising and irrigation system installations, planting and grafting, employee and equipment selection
  • Planning and directing work assignments, effectively training and managing farm

employees whilst adhering to applicable legislation and standards

  • Establishing appropriate procedures, ensuring adherence and maintaining quality standards
  • Maintenance of vineyards, equipment and property

Specific duties:

  • Coordination and supervision of each week’s vineyard management activities in conjunction with the Winemaker and/or Vineyard Consultant
  • Removal of alien vegetation and re-establishing fynbos in conjunction with the General Manager
  • Keeping abreast of any changes with regards to practices or seasonal development to sustain the best quality in the vineyards
  • Arranging appropriate job-specific, social, ethical and health & safety training in conjunction with Human Resource Department and doing appraisals
  • Maintenance of property, which includes maintaining a pristine environment on the entire farm and in all buildings
  • Applying health and safety standards across the estate and ensuring compliance with appropriate legislation
  • Managing, motivating and developing employees whilst maintaining discipline to ensure adherence to company rules, quality standards and procedures, within the broader framework of BRC, IPW and WIETA standards
  • All record-keeping and reporting of activities done on the farm and products used
  • Management of the conservation and protection of the environment in accordance with the planning review and BWI approval
  • Ad hoc duties

 

Requirements:

  • Excellent viticultural knowledge as well as the capacity to drive innovation and, eventually, wine improvement
  • A minimum of five years relevant practical experience in vineyard management and/or development is required
  • Excellent planning and managerial skills as well as the ability and desire to be a team player
  • Highly organized and structured individual with above average attention to detail and the ability to work independently and to build positive, constructive relationships at all levels
  • An appropriate agricultural qualification (e.g. Elsenburg)
