GENERAL MANAGER / CHIEF WINEMAKER

A well-known,world leading International  Wine Company, with one of its production sites based in the beautiful region of Stellenbosch,South Africa are currently looking for a candidate to fulfill the position as General Manager/Chief Wine Winemaker, The position is responsible for all wines in the portfolio and winery management.

We have a clear aspiration to sit alongside the great wineries of the world

Working across our key vineyards in South Africa,(possibly International)  the GM/Chief Winemaker will continue to build on the tradition and quality of our production ranges. You will also be a key brand Ambassador for our SA brands, travelling to international markets to tell our story and present our wines, while utilizing your strong network in the process. Your outstanding qualifications and experience provide you with the knowledge and technical ability to lead your team with an uncompromising attention to detail and managing +- 30 staff (depending on harvest ) per year

The successful candidate will have a passion for fine wine plus extensive knowledge of viticulture and winemaking across a range of regions, styles and market segments. The position also covers efficient, safe, site management and marketing support activity – both domestic and international. To be eligible for this role we would expect a minimum 5 years in a premium winemaking role, a proven track record for making the highest quality wine, experience and exposure to the great wines of the world through a diversity of experience including vintages in other regions outside of South Africa

This position sits on the leadership team, so it is expected that you are a good leader of people, have strong commercial and business acumen and an ability and desire to contribute to the strategic direction of the company.

Reporting to the international CEO, the Chief Winemaker will oversee the wine portfolio, manage the local winemaking team and operations of the winery.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Mentor and manage the SA Winemaking team (Winemaker, Assistants, Vineyard Managers)
Ensure compliant, safe operation of the winery
Oversee red, white and sparkling wine production
Manage wine allocations, blending and inventory
Work with the Viticulture team,developing a focused fruit resource of the right size and quality;
Explore and implement new Winemaking developments to improve quality and/o
efficiencies
Provide technical input into the winery development and capital projects
Report monthly to the CEO on matters such as operations,supply & demand balance and quality;
Coordinate wine show entries and strategy with the Winemaking team.

Skills and Qualifications

At least 5 years’ relevant winemaking experience in large and small wineries across multiple regions and varieties
University degree in Wine/ Elsenburg Diploma
Demonstrated ability to judge red, white, and sparkling wines
Wine show judge with panel chair experience is desirable
Drivers licence and ability to travel both interstate and internationally

MBA / MDP / SMDP course or degree will be beneficial to this position
