Tunnel Farming – Production Assistant Vacancy - Negotiable, based on experience

We are a prominent Estate just outside of Franschhoek, with a division that grows and packs herbs 6 days a week for the South African retail market. We are seeking to employ a Production assistant, to oversee the production in our tunnels as well as other farming activities.


  • Collaborates with the picking team to develop an accurate crop forecast that reflects future demand.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the department
  • Manage all tunnel activities - planning of all seeding, nursery, growing and harvesting, sorting, record keeping, maintenance of health standards and safety as per Global Gap and food safety standards.
  • Overall welfare of the plants in order to meet the yield quota
  • Assign duties such as cultivation, irrigation, harvesting, pruning, grading and equipment maintenance
  • Ensure that all the SOPs stipulated are met
  • Oversee the Nutrient balancing and management of the system, plant health, control of pests
  • Water quality testing (including pH, EC, temperature and other critical parameters)
  • Provide input and recommendations for new products and varieties and contributes to their commercialization and acceptance in the marketplace
  • Complete and compile required records on crops and land base
  • Performs special projects and other duties as assigned
  • Assist with food safety audits
  • Training and supervision of staff
  • Observe workers to detect inefficient or unsafe work procedures or to identify problems and initiate corrective action as necessary·
  • Facilitate the administration of payroll and preparation of time cards
  • Maintain a positive and professional working relationship with peers and management
  • Ability to work independently as well as with other personnel and management
  • Requisition or purchase of supplies, such as insecticides, machine parts/lubricants, tools and implementation of stock control measures.



  • Must have minimum of 2 years’ experience in farming (nutrient formulae, preparing solutions, nutrient requirements, deficiencies, toxicities, pH, growth regulators)
  • Degree / Diploma in Horticulture will be an advantage
  • Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of organic farming and permaculture techniques is an advantage.
  • HCCAP / Global Gap knowledge an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent command of the English and Afrikaans language.
