A rare opportunity exists for a passionate and motivated individual to join our forward-thinking team as Assistant Winemaker.

Certified Organic and Specialising in Pinotage, Chenel, and Chenin Blanc, Springfontein Wine Estate lies within the ward, Springfontein Rim. This is a unique terroir with pure Limestone and vineyards surrounded by indigenous Fynbos vegetation. This is a great opportunity to further your knowledge and skills in an innovative and quality-focused cellar.

Under the Winemaker’s direction, this diverse role requires a mixture of hands-on and supervisory skills and encompasses all winery activities and will also provide you with valuable insights into the broader operation of a successful small wine business.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Management of the cellar work activities based on cellar work sheets.
  • Performance and supervision of cellar work as required.
  • Management and implementation of winery hygiene.
  • Maintain a tidy, efficient and well-presented work environment within and outside the vicinity of the winery.
  • Keep well-informed of and embrace new developments in the wine industry.
  • Ensure all record keeping and procedures comply with SAWIS and EOS, NOP Organic Certification.
  • Maintain a high level of quality control measures including sending juice and wine samples to lab for analysis and making necessary adjustments.
  • Bottling functions (scheduling, blending, stabilizations and bottling by a contractor).
  • Labelling Functions (scheduling, labelling with own machine and packaging).
  • Conduct vineyard tours and wine tastings for guests, when needed.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of the winemaking process and procedures.
  • Provide support with vineyard operations, when needed.

To be considered for this position you must have the following qualities/skills:

  • University Degree in Winemaking and Viticulture.
  • 2 – 5 years’ experience in winemaking environment.
  • Hard working and self-motivating.
  • Well-developed organizational skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal & leadership skills.
  • Responsiveness. 
  • Positive & Committed Attitude.
