The assistant production manager supports the production manager by supervising and also execute the various tasks necessary to produce and deliver high quality crops to the market, including but not limited to: planting, pruning, spraying, mowing, irrigation, fertilizing and harvesting of the table grapes yield.  


Reports to: Production Manager

Manages:   Supervisors/Operators


  1. Production
  • Schedule tasks and ensure that team/s under supervision performs all tasks as per instruction, SOP and standard.
  • Direct activities with regards to herbicide, insecticide and/or fertilizer application as per instruction.
  • Scout vines for problem areas and report irregularities to production manager.
  • Supervise the planting, cultivating and harvesting of table grapes.
  • Ensure that all team members are trained as needed.
  • Implement crop protection programs, i.e. fertilising, weed control, pest and disease control, crop spraying, per agreed standards and instruction of production manager
  • Prepare the fruit for harvest with regards to pruning, irrigation, scouting, soil samples and quality.
  • Adjust irrigation systems to distribute water according to crop needs and to avoid wasting water.
  • Maintain farm buildings and equipment.  
  • Make timely recommendations to production manager regarding equipment and supply needs.
  • Apply health, safety, and environmental standards and regulations.
  • Maintain and practice sound labour relations and HR practices.
  • Demonstrate or explain working techniques, practices, or safety regulations to sub-ordinates.
  1. Administration
  • Create reports on time re. equipment, materials, costs, and production;  
  • Contain expenditure according to allocated budget.
  • Participate in team meetings and operational planning meetings  
  • Maintain a daily work-log to plan and record details of vineyard work accomplished.
  • Keep record of chemical/fertiliser usage and application.
  • Monitor time and attendance and related administrative taks and functions.
  • Ensure that all records are adequately maintained in an orderly manner.



  • Relevant horticulture/pomology qualification.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Supervisory skills.
  • Willingness to be outside in all weathers and patience to undertake all sorts of practical, sometimes repetitive jobs.
  • Working knowledge of Excel.
  • A good understanding of modern farming methods.
  • Current and valid South African driver’s licenc
