Steenberg Vineyards is in search of a Viticulturist. The successful candidate will have substantial experience in wine-grape farming and management and a passion for providing the best quality wine grapes in collaboration with the vision and goals of the cellar and winemaking team.

Minimum Qualification: Diploma / Bachelor’s degree in Viticulturecode 8 license

Level of Experience:
• At least 5 years relevant working experience with vineyards (including in a management capacity).
• Knowledge and experience of relevant quality systems (IPW) & other regenerative viticulture techniques.
• a fundamental understanding of wine grape health, yield and quality
• Fully bilingual (Afrikaans and English)
- Advanced data processing and computer literacy skills

Job Requirements

• Day-to-day management, strategic planning & focused activities of both vineyards and estate
• Production of grapes under a wide variety of natural conditions including preparation of the land, planting, trellising, pruning, monitoring, and controlling of pests and diseases, fertilizing, irrigation and canopy management.
• Understand optimum ripeness (fruit development and characteristics) and proper harvesting of grapes.
• Design and implement pest and disease control programs following pest management practices and a sustainable farming approach.
• Use plant, climate and soil moisture monitoring equipment for scheduling irrigation and modelling grapevine shape/phrenology.
• Collect, organize and report viticulture data to support farming and marketing decisions.
• Stay current on wine grape research and diagnose and solve viticulture problems.
• General maintenance of the irrigation, dam, pump stations, borehole etc. work closely with the maintenance team on planning & execution
• Coordination, collaboration & management of vineyard & maintenance teams – you will be required to review structures & fine-tune in order to create efficiency, better skills & overall synergy
• All matters relating to staff – discipline, development, procurement etc
• Record keeping and compilation of key data and production reports.
• Management of operating costs, annual budgets and capital requirements.
• Quality management and all other duties relevant to the position.
