Do you have an affinity for nature and love being outdoors and literally not afraid to get your hands dirty?

Our client, based in the helderberg, is looking to appoint a Junior Horticulturist to the team. the goal of the appointment is to assist the gardens manager with a variety of structured & informal gardens. your primary role will be to care, maintain & cultivate propagation of plants. you will have a serious, curious & educated interest in plants and nature and join this team of passionate professionals. you will be required to work within a team and often in a customer-facing role – it will help if you have a friendly, can-do attitude.

Other duties inter alia:

  • assisting with the management and maintenance of all the prize-winning gardens and plant collections, trees and garden infrastructure
  • supervision of the team of gardeners (18-20 gardeners)
  • knowledgeable about soil conditions, irrigation needs, nutrient requirements, light intensity, plant pathology and plant insects.
  • ability to analyse plants to identify nutrient deficiencies, disease and or pest infestations, and to determine the best measures to remedy the problem.
  • preparation of seed beds and successful transfer of plants to containers
  • safe transfer of planted pots around the work site
  • propagation of new plants using inter alia grafting techniques
  • plant / tree varietal pruning


  • excellent communication and junior management skills
  • “green fingers” and a fresh creative flair are essential
  • grade 12 or equivalent plus a degree/ diploma in horticulture
  • at least 5 years practical experience in ornamental landscaping in a large estate & garden environment
  • at least 5 years experience in effectively managing teams of gardeners
  • ability to communicate in and understand english / afrikaans / xhosa
  • a passion for gardening
  • attention to detail
  • a positive ‘can do’ attitude
