My Client is a pecan processing plant located in Hartswater, where more than half of South Africa’s pecans are grown. The main functions of the Pecan Plant are the sizing, grading and cracking of pecans. Nuts suitable for in-shell exports are cleaned and sorted accordingly, while pecan halves and pieces go through a more rigorous process of cracking and grading. After nut samples are taken, they are analyzed according to physical, microbiological and chemical specifications. Each consignment receives a detailed analysis document with pecan specifications to ensure compliance.
OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:
The purpose of the Line Manager: Quality Control is to ensure that all pecans purchased, processed and sold consistently meet internal and external quality requirements. This role requires accurate grading, thorough monitoring of processes, data interpretation and proactive quality improvement. The position forms an important link between purchasing, production, quality control and management.
EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:·
- Minimum Grade 12 with Mathematics.
- Qualifications in statistics, quality control or food technology will be strongly considered in the candidate’s favour.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in a quality control, food processing or similar production environment.
- Strong computer skills and knowledge of Excel are a requirement.
- Knowledge of statistics, quality assurance or process control is advantageous.
- Excellent attention to detail and accurate record keeping.
- Ability to function under high pressure or fast-paced environments.
- Excellent analytical thinking skills.
- Clear and professional communication.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Quality Assurance
- Oversee the regular execution of tests, grading and inspections on all purchases (grades, kernel percentage, moisture content, waste).
- Validate the accuracy of test procedures and results.
2. Monitoring and Process Control·
- Monitoring each stage of the processing process to ensure it meets set quality and operational standards.
- Identifying deviations and reporting to production management.
3. Documentation and Record Keeping·
- Collection, recording and maintenance of all data, grading records, test results and quality related logs.
- Ensure that documentation is complete, accurate and timely.
4. Data Analysis and Reporting·
- Analysis of input versus output: quality, volume differences, trends, comparisons and deviations. Preparation of regular reports for operational management.
- Identification of patterns that affect production efficiency and product quality.
5. Quality Improvement·
- Identify areas that require attention or improvement and propose recommendations.
- Support the implementation of improvement processes and corrective actions.
- Collaborate with production to develop proactive strategies to increase quality and reduce waste.
6. Training and Support·
- Train staff on quality standards, procedures, cleaning requirements and good production practices
- Ensure staff work consistently and accurately to standards.
