A boutique wine estate in the Stellenbosch region, is seeking a passionate and driven Assistant Winemaker to join our cellar team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a hands-on, detail-oriented individual who is eager to grow within a quality-focused and creative winemaking environment. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong communication and organisational skills, a proactive mindset, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a close-knit team.

The role will focus on supporting the production of premium white, red, and specialty wines, reflecting the unique character and story of Kanu Wines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Winemaker in all aspects of wine production, including crushing, fermentation, maturation, blending, and finishing

  • Support harvest planning and execution, including grape intake and processing

  • Monitor fermentations and overall wine development, including routine analysis and record-keeping

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date vintage and cellar records

  • Oversee and assist with racking, blending, filtration, barrel work, and bottling preparation

  • Ensure high standards of hygiene and sanitation within the cellar

  • Assist with blending trials and preparation of wines for bottling

  • Supervise and support cellar staff during harvest and throughout the production cycle

  • Perform administrative duties including stock control, production tracking, and regulatory reporting (e.g. SAWIS)

  • Collaborate with vineyard, logistics, and sales teams where required

  • Represent Kanu Wines at tastings, events, and client engagements when needed

  • Assist with general cellar operations and any additional duties related to the role

Minimum Requirements

  • Degree or Diploma in Viticulture and Oenology (or similar qualification)

  • 2–4 years’ relevant cellar or winemaking experience

  • Strong attention to detail and a passion for quality wine production

  • Good computer literacy (MS Office; experience with cellar management systems advantageous)

  • Ability to work extended hours during harvest and peak production periods

  • Strong interpersonal and team leadership skills

  • Own reliable transport
