The Perdeberg Group, situated in the Paarl Wine region, has an exciting career opportunity available for a commercially minded wine professional in the role of Commercial Manager: Wine Resources. This newly created position has been established to take full ownership of Perdeberg’s total wine resource - ensuring the best possible application of wine-from-grapes and procured wine across our existing customer base and towards new growth opportunities.

The ideal candidate is a commercially-minded winemaker with a business or finance qualification, or a strong commercial professional with deep wine industry knowledge - in either case, bringing sound financial acumen and the ability to think strategically about the wine business.

The successful candidate will report to the Head of Commercial, andKPA’s will include (but not be limited to): *Wine Resource Management & Procurement: Determine and allocate Perdeberg’s total grape-sourced wine resource to the customer base; identify shortfalls and source from external producers at the right quality and price; manage the contracted wine schedule; conduct formal sensory assessments of all procured parcels; maintain a forward procurement forecast aligned to customer shipping schedules and vintage availability. *Wine Selling & Customer Management: Manage and grow the existing export and local wine customer base; actively prospect and onboard new customers; determine appropriate pricing across all wine components; manage customer shipping schedules; participate in customer tastings alongside the wine and commercial team to present and secure business; promote Perdeberg’s dry-land wine credentials for higher-end product lines and own labels. *Stock, Demand Planning & Financial Control: Conclude wine contracting and monitor demand planning of the total wine resource; monitor stock levels per customer and variety; manage trading activity within approved budget parameters; track R/L sales, GP% and wine buying cost weekly; maintain a clean debtors book; provide accurate monthly financial reporting. *Regulatory, Compliance & Export Documentation: Ensure all procurement and sales transactions are correctly captured on SAWIS and Wine Online; manage customs and excise documentation with SARS and DAFF; prepare export documentation including certificates of origin, EUR.1, health and phytosanitary certificates; stay current with excise duty and labelling legislation changes. *Supplier Relations & Business Development: Build and maintain productive relationships with all wine suppliers; coordinate the quarterly supplier newsletter; actively participate in business development platforms to secure new business, including international trade travel as required; represent Perdeberg professionally across all supplier and customer engagements.

Essential qualifications, skills, and experience:

  • BSc Agriculture (Viticulture/Oenology) or equivalent winemaking qualification, ideally supplemented by business, finance or commercial training (e.g. BCom, BBA, Diploma in Financial Management or equivalent), OR a BCom or equivalent business/finance degree will be considered where the candidate has demonstrated wine industry experience;
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant experience in the wine industry, ideally with exposure to both wine production and commercial wine trading;
  • Proven working knowledge of SAWIS, Wine Online, SARS excise and DAFF requirements;
  • Strong computer literacy (specifically MS Excel); Wine Online; WineMS; ERP/stock management system;
  • Excellent communication skills in English;
  • Valid code B driver’s licence;
  • Willingness to travel locally and internationally as required.
