We are looking for a dynamic, experienced and enthusiastic Farm / Vineyard Manager to join our team. The estate is focused on premium wine production, and if you have an obsession with viticulture and a strong desire to farm top quality grapes for wine, this is the place for you.
The farm manager is required to be hands on in the vineyards and work closely with the small permanent team as well as outsourced contractors. The farm manager will have the opportunity to learn from some of the best local and international viticultural consultants.
Working conditions will require the farm manager to generally work outdoors, in the vines and occasionally on weekends.
Job description:
Ensuring all vineyard practices are undertaken meticulously with a high degree of accuracy.
- Manage and oversee all practices pertaining to the vineyard including but not limited to:
- Pruning, canopy management during growth season, crop quality control, sampling during harvest season, vineyard planting and replacement, spray scheduling, weed management, fertilization, young vine training, maintenance of irrigation lines, irrigation implementation and scheduling, data capture of vineyard performance, record keeping of all practices, IPW certification
- Maintenance of farm equipment (tractors, boreholes, pumps, generators etc)
- Management of the permanent staff (record keeping of leave, health and safety training, discipline)
- Maintenance of the road and general upkeep of farm implements and buildings
- Control alien plant clearing
- Implement fire prevention measures
- Maintain and evaluate records of farming activities
The farm manager will need to work closely with the winemaker and cellar master as well as viticultural consultants.
Requirements:
- Relevant qualification
- At least 10 years’ experience in a similar role with a focus on quality wine production. There is no prescription on age but rather on health, enthusiasm and energy.
- Proficient in English and Afrikaans (spoken and written)
- Computer skills (e-mail, MSword and MSexcel)
- Drivers license
- Own transport
- Self-starter, hard working and ability to give clear and concise instruction
- Excellent communication skills
